Darwin vs. Lamarck

Picture
Nature versus nurture is a concept that one may ponder. Does the environment influence who we are and become or is it heredity? With this in mind, we decided to test the theories of Darwin and Lamarck.  Lamarck believed in adaptation. He argued that, “life was not fixed. When environments changed, organisms had to change their behavior to survive” (Understanding Evolution). On the contrary, Darwin believed in evolution. “He argued that complexity evolved simply as a result of life adapting to its local conditions from one generation to the next. He also argued that species could go extinct rather than change into new forms” (Understanding Evolution).

We decided to test the theories of Charles Darwin and Jean Baptiste Lamarck.  In order to determine whether individuals believed in Darwin’s theory of evolution or Lamarck’s theory of adaptation, subjects were asked an array of questions.  The ultimate question to help us understand the understanding of others was: Why do giraffes have long necks?
